The Story

Argonaut Community Enterprises was founded by 2 deaf people who both worked in employment services to ensure access for deaf jobseekers.

We noticed that despite having relevant qualifications and excellent skills or experiences deaf candidates were, for various reasons, still having problems securing work.

Further research with other disabilities found similar issues.

The problems were particularly apparent for people who are deaf, visually impaired or have a learning disability where the overriding issue is access to information and communication.

During a working visit to Australia a few years ago we found out about a company called Cleanforce who were securing mainstream contracts and appointing disabled people to deliver. Based on this idea, the model for Argonaut was developed and established.

Argonaut was born in September 2010 and is not-for-profit. Trading started mostly in domestic cleaning with some commercial delivery.

But we did not stop there.

Our commercial customers were asking us if we delivered other services. So, we went back to the drawing board and changed our business plan to incorporate Garden maintenance, Internal Buildings maintenance, Laundry and Ironing and PAT testing. Every contract is tailored to specific needs. We pride ourselves on delivering a quality, customised service to all of our customers.

To see deaf or disabled people in work, which fulfils their aspirations and potential, delivering soft Facilities Management services to Commercial, Third Sector and Domestic customers.

We are deaf-led and the staff team is predominantly deaf. Most of our work is carried out mainstream and all our staff work closely with customers to ensure satisfactory outcomes.

From January to May 2015 we have taken on 3 more people and increased working hours for some existing staff.

Our board of Directors is fully represented with a mix of deaf and disabled people. We have an advisor from the construction industry who supports us with the infrastructure and policy development. We would be delighted to add to the board and welcome those from the finance, personnel and marketing sectors.

We all know the barriers that deaf or disabled people face when looking for work. Argonaut enlists people who want to work and will go that extra mile to achieve. Some of our team have been out of work for 12 years despite having excellent skills and experience.

The type of work we deliver can sometimes see high levels of staff changes. Argonaut’s is very low by comparison, which means we are confident our customers will see the same people carrying out their requested jobs. We also ensure cover for holidays and any sickness so you will be introduced to other members of our team – all will have been previously inducted to understand each customer’s specific needs.
